Customer Spotlight: BRAMS Beer

At Stomp, we love raising a glass to celebrate our amazing customers. Today, we’re shining the spotlight on BRAMS Beer, a California-based brewery founded by Cindy Nagamura Chen. Inspired by a family trip to France and a shared love of traditional European-style beer, Cindy and her husband Carl have built BRAMS Beer into a community-focused brewery with sustainability and inclusivity at its core.

We had the pleasure of chatting with Cindy about how BRAMS got started, their goals, why they chose Stomp for their beer labels, and what makes their brewery a standout in a sea of exceptional craft beer.

How did BRAMS Beer get started?

During a family trip to France, my husband Carl discovered a lovely French pilsner and suggested that I bring this to California. Knowing nothing about brewing, my ignorance gave me an unusual confidence and enthusiasm for traditionally brewed beer that took a few years to finally get right. Once we had our flagship French pilsner, I sought to recreate other delicious European-style beer including the trappist-style Dubbel, and a dry coffee cacao stout that form the core of our beer portfolio. I take inspiration from the likes of Patagonia, New Belgium, and Title Nine, in creating our company culture and have focused BRAMS around quality, locally-grown (where possible), family-owned ingredients where suppliers, employees, alongside customers, form the basis of our community.

What are the goals for BRAMS Beer?

The main focus for BRAMS is creating a company dedicated to traditional European-style beer using local ingredients while supporting our community. Two main aspects form the foundation of community for BRAMS. The first is the sustainability of the supply chain. We are extremely conscious of every aspect of our supply chain from malt to cardboard box. Some of our suppliers are surprised by the questions we ask them (e.g. what kind of plastic is used in your white BOPP label?) but we feel a responsibility to our customers to know where and how our products are made. We become stewards of these raw materials to our customers who in turn take pride in serving BRAMS to theirs.

Key to the community mission is designing a brewery that supports women, which centers not only around company culture, our (hopefully growing) hiring practices, but also the tools that we use and how breweries, which involve a lot of heavy lifting, can be inclusive through innovation and technology. This is a challenging, constantly evolving topic that we enjoy tackling at BRAMS.

What sets BRAMS Beer apart from other breweries?

There is SO MUCH good beer out there! I'm not sure we're competing so much as telling a story and being a part of an ever-growing wonderful menu of delicious beers that customers now have the luxury to choose. We feel honored to be among the other fantastic breweries in California and throughout the world and find ourselves telling the BRAMS story but also introducing anybody we meet to the fantastic offerings that folks in Oregon, Colorado, Idaho, Belgium, France, Japan produce. It's exciting to be amongst such incredible competition. It keeps us on our toes and constantly striving to make excellent, high-quality beer.
